by Giulia Enders

The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ by Giulia Enders -Giulia became interested in the gut when she was in medical school.  Her roommate at the time asked her questions and her research began uncovering information that she wasn’t learning in traditional medical training. Cleverly written for an engaging dissertation on the poorly-known functions and communication inside the human body.

Buddha’s Brain

by Rick Hanson, Ph.D.

Enlightening insight into the Neuroscience behind mindfulness and meditation. Dr. Hanson delves into the hormone and neurotransmitter fluctuations that occur with a consistent meditation practice. These shifts in turn, affect the entire body. A fascinating read for those of us who appreciate life at a molecular level.

The Power of Habit

by Charles Duhigg

What does it really take to change?  Dr. Duhigg from Stanford University reveals his revelations into how the human brain is hard-wired to maintain the status quo. Changing habits changes lives. This book helped me to understand the hidden forces driving us in everyday life and especially in times of stress.

Self-Compassion – Stop Beating Yourself Up and Leave Insecurity Behind

by Kristin Neff, Ph.D.

Dr. Kristin Neff reveals her personal journey through finding self-compassion in her own life. Then offers practical exercises to make it accessible to anyone. She now conducts research at The University of Texas at Austin in self compassion and offers workshops world-wide. Putting this book into practice turned my outlook on life around.

Mind Over Medicine

by Lissa Rankin, MD

Dr. Lissa Rankin shares her personal story of her evolution from a traditional Obstetrician/Gynecologist to a functional medicine doctor who realized that the disease process has an enormous psychological component. It has stopped me in my tracks and helped to change my approach to patient care. A beautiful exploration that continues the quest for health where modern medicine runs out of answers.

The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up

by Marie Kondo

To say this book changed my life would be trite. It revolutionized it. Marie Kondo who nurtures a lifetime obsession with organization, puts new twist on cleaning out the closet. The only things to put back are those that spark joy in the heart, the rest discard. I have a friend who realized she owned no pants after doing this clearing. She now only wears things that make her feel fantastic. And it’s not just clothes, it’s everything. Every day I am surrounded only by things that bring me happiness and the newly open space is filled with love and gratitude. Try it out. It’s free, unless you need to buy more pants) just boxes, garbage bags, and gas to take loads to the thrift store. It took me about a year to complete the process. Caveat: The process can become consuming and affect social outings, but the end result is worth far more than the sacrifice.

Felicity

by Mary Oliver

I received this book as a gift for my 50th birthday from a dear friend.  Reading Mary Oliver’s poetry is like curling up with a warm cup of tea, only better.  The very first poem I put after my email signature because it was so succinct and poignant.  I enjoy them like an amazing box of chocolates, one at a time.

Body Thrive

by Cate Stillman

As a Certified Yoga Health Coach I extend enormous gratitude to Cate for writing down these life-changing habits. Being a participant in the first Body Thrive class and watching the process blossom into a book has been an exciting ride. Cate presents her knowledge in a down-to-earth  and practical guide. Change your life with these 10 habits from the ancient science of Ayurveda, “the study of life”.

Cutting for Stone

by Abraham Verghese

As the only novel in this list, this book spoke to so many parts of me: a journey through medical residency, my career as an Obstetrician and surgeon, my work in Africa and love for third-world medicine, my relationship with Ayurveda, and observation of the human condition. Dr. Verghesse exquisitely unravels an intricate story of conjoined twin brothers from Ethiopia. It is culturally, intellectually, and emotionally a fantastic read.
