What is MBSR?

Zen stones in water

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is an 8-week course where one learns to examine stress and his/her relationship to stress. Through these teachings one learns to calm the mind and body. As a result, better coping skills are cultivated. The practice of mindfulness is taught where one learns to be in the present moment, on purpose without judgment.

It started in 1979 when Jon Kabat-Zinn opened the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Doctors sent their cases who weren’t responding to conventional western medical treatments. This began the era of participatory medicine where patients/clients take responsibility for doing their own internal work to tap into their deep inner resources. As a result, the initial class began to see healing from inside that their doctors couldn’t explain. A unique form of healing, growing, learning and transformation has evolved called MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduciton).

MBSR joins the disciplines of mindfulness meditation and yoga (or mindful movement). These ancient disciplines are taught in an 8-week class format where students meet weekly and have assigned home practice in between sessions. Students cultivate an awareness of mind-body unity. They begin to see how unconscious thoughts, feelings, and behaviors can undermine emotional, physical and spiritual health. Waking up to sympathetic (fight, flight or freeze) responses that unconsciously “run the show ”, it becomes possible to invite a calmer, parasympathetic orientation to life. This results overall in less pain and suffering.

MBSR has become a platform of research in all fields of medicine from Neuroscience to Dermatology. It has been shown to lower blood pressure, lessen chronic pain, and improve immune response. It is offered in over 200 medical centers, clinics and hospitals worldwide. With extensive training Dr. Beth brings this discipline to Flagstaff, AZ. Courses are intermittent throughout the year. Notifications will be posted here.

Here are what people have to say about this course:

“They say that the practice of anesthesia is a mixture of 99% boredom and 1% terror. I have found that my practice of meditation provides respite from both of these stresses of my work life. Whenever I ask a patient to take a breath while listening to their lungs, I close my eyes as I mirror their inspiration and expirations. My mind and body loosen and I feel more grounded and slowed for the rest of the interaction and the day.”

-Dr. David Kumasaka

“Life Changing.  I have gained a new respect and love for myself.  I have confidence that I can live a life without pharmaceuticals to handle pain and anxiety.”

-Lisa

“This course has had a profound impact on my mental health.  More than meds and therapy have done.  I now feel I have a tool that I know works.  Thank you for everything you have done and opening this world to me.”

-Chris

“I think there isn’t a single person on the planet who wouldn’t benefit from this course. I would describe it as an introduction to self-exploration.  Although challenging, the benefits are immense.”
