doTERRA Essential Oils - What is an essential oil?
The volatile liquids that are distilled from plants are their essential oils. Volatile means that they easily evaporate at normal temperatures. This makes them have an odor or smell. The vapors waft up into our olfactory (smelling) centers. Various parts of a particular plant can be distilled – the seeds, bark, stem, root, flowers, fruit, etc. The constituents of any oil are influenced by many variables including the climate, soil, temperature, altitude, season of harvest, geographic region and distillation process.
Essential oils were man’s first medicine as found in Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts. There are over 188 references to essential oils in the Bible. They were also found in King Tut’s tomb.
Because essential oils are a vital part of a plant, they also help humans and animals with their regenerating, oxygenating and immune-strengthening properties. They are a small molecular size and can penetrate the cell membrane and be metabolized like other nutrients. In fact, within 20 minutes an oil can affect every cell in the body. They can create an unfriendly environment for free radicals and therefore have strong antioxidant properties. Due to their deep penetration into all organs they can flush, cleanse, and gently detoxify the body.
There are three ways to administer an essential oil – diffused into the air, applied topically on the skin, and taken internally by mouth. Different oils are optimally administered different ways and not all can be taken internally.
Because they work so well, and have different regulations than pharmaceutical drugs, they have come under scrutiny by the FDA. Claims for treatments and advertising need to be carefully announced until further notice.
