Autumn Self Care

This photo is an appropriate illustration of what self-care should look like in the autumn. Our attention is pulled from the trees to the close foreground, calling us to be more internal and reflective, mindful of each moment and increasingly present with ourselves. In the autumn, trees and plants pull in and lose their leaves. Critters prepare for hibernation and the birds are begin their migrations. So should we pull in and nurture ourselves in the most loving way.

Simple steps such as going to bed a little bit earlier, and getting ready for bed when the sunlight starts to change can translate to enormous benefits in our health. Small actions like turning off the computer after dark, lighting a candle, or dimming the overhead lights helps our bodies prepare for rest.

As we take care of our bodies, our immune system strengthens as well. The change of season is the most common time of year to “come down with something,” which is often attributed to allergies or catching a cold. Here are a few tips to keep your body well and immune system strong during the autumn:

  1. Get to bed earlier – Attuning to the earth’s rhythms of winding down with the sun helps our immune system recharge.
  2. Apply nasya oil to the nose in dry climates or if your nasal mucosa is prone to nose bleeds. Alternatively, flush the nose using a Neti pot in humid climates or if you tend towards congestion. This should be done upon awakening and before sleep. To purchase Nasya oil go to the Albuquerque Ayurvedic Institute website. CLICK HERE-Five drops to each nostril morning and evening. I have found tremendous help with this simple action.
  3. Diffuse OnGuard essential oil blend by doTerra. Thiscan also be rubbed onto the feet before bed with a carrier oil such as coconut oil. The mixture of Wild Orange, Clove Bud, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils is a natural infection fighter. We use it up in our house quickly. FIND IT HERE
  4. Eat warming foods. Choosing meals with warming spices such as curry, cardamom, and ginger can help us stay warm internally and healthier in the Fall. Soups can also help our bodies stay hydrated. In Northern Arizona this is a good tip!
  5. On chilly mornings wear a light scarf to cover the neck. Staying warm helps immunity stay strong. I learned this tip from my European friends who all wear scarves, men and women alike.

With these few tips may you be able to stay healthy. Enjoy the beauty of autumn and marvel at the earth turning inward and staying close to itself in preparation for winter.
